4 Tips for Keeping Your 2022 Wellness-Related New Year’s Resolutions

Every year, when January 1st rolls around, millions of people set intentions that center around living a healthier lifestyle. After the last two years, many of us need wellness in our lives, now more than ever, but sticking to our New Years resolutions isn’t always easy.

If you’re hoping to take better care of your mind, body and spirit this year, we have a few tips to help you stick to your plans and make 2022 a great year for your well-being.

Start Small

Ever heard of a little thing called burn out? One of the reasons people often fail to keep their resolutions is because they try to make too many changes all at once. It’s okay to be optimistic about the changes you want to make, but don’t over do it.

Start with one change. See if you can stick with that one change for 30 days, then, if you’re feeling good, consider adding an additional change.

Maybe you want to work out and eat healthy in the new year. Start by creating a regular workout routine first without worrying about the healthy diet. Then, once you’ve established your exercise routine with consistency, start making changes to your diet.

Add one change at a time so you can focus on getting consistent with each new habit, and avoid getting burnt out.

Be Consistent

When it comes to creating healthier habits, consistency is key. They say it takes 21 days to form a habit, but only 3 days to break one. Whatever your New Year’s resolutions are, make sure you approach them with consistency. If you need to skip out on your routine every now and then, try not to skip more than 2 consecutive days.

Maybe your goal is to start journaling. Whether you chose to do it every, or every other day, or even once a week, be consistent. Try journaling every day at the same time. Or if your goal is once a week, make sure you do it on the same day each wee k. That consistency will help you turn your goal into a habit that sticks.

Treat it Like Parenting

If you have kids, then you know that as a parent, you have to tell them to do the things that are good for them. You have to encourage your kids to brush their teeth and eat their veggies, and do their homework. You don’t give them a choice not to do these things, because you’re their parent and that’s your job. It’s your job to teach them how to take care of themselves, and grow into successful adults.

Treat yourself like a kid who needs to be told what to do. Be your own parent and encourage yourself to stick with your new habits. Rewarded yourself for doing a good job. Sometimes you may even have to force yourself to follow through with your intentions, no matter how badly you don’t want to.

No one else is going to make you do it. No one is going to punish you if you choose not to. That’s the thing about being an adult. So if you want to be successful with your New Years Resolutions, treat yourself like a child.

Get Comfortable with Mistakes

Often, when a person lapses in their consistency, or has even just one off-day with their routine, it’s enough to make them throw in the towel and give up completely. Don’t!

It’s okay to make mistakes. It’s okay to start over. Every day is a new opportunity to make positive changes in your life. So if you miss a whole week at the gym, that’s okay, start again the next week. If a month goes by without any journal entries, no worries! Just start again when you’re ready.

If you fall off the band wagon at any point in time, you don’t have to wait till 2023 to start again. Use every day as an opportunity to take control of your well-being.

Remember, wellness is not a fad and it’s not about changing yourself because you think something is wrong with you. It’s about taking care of yourself because you deserve to be taken care of. It’s about feeling your best so you can live a better life.
